The film:

The model Fede loves the writer Arte, but he is enmeshed by the beautiful Femmina. Fede takes comfort in the Faun, a mythological creature who becomes animated from the stone sculpted by Arte. The love story with the Faun represents a return to a dreamt wildness impossible by now, for the modern man, to reach and maintain. A big lighting research for one of the best film directed by Febo Mari, also playing beside a tormented Fede Sedino and a gorgeous Elena Makowska.

The film restoration:

The restoration of Il fauno was carried out by the Cinématèque Royale de Belgique of Brussels and by the Cineteca del Friuli of Gemona, in collaboration with the Museo Nazionale del Cinema di Torino, from a nitrate original belonging to the Suomen Elokuva-Arkisto of Helsinki and a 16mm copy conserved at the Museum collection.

An analysis of the copies revealed that the Finnish copy was more reliable and it became the color reference for the coloration film colorization. The reproduction of the colors was particularly complex because of the refined method of tinting and toning.

Colorization and restoration of the Italian intertitles were the essential elements of the preservation conducted in 1994.
