The film:

“The film depicts in a telling manner an incident in the days of Garibaldi, whose call for volunteers to aid him in his battles meets with a ready response … In the last scene we are transported back again to the boy’s home where we see his mother, to whom a vision appears of her boy standing beneath the statue of honor. The subject is extremely well dealt with, and the film, which is good for quality throughout, possesses several novel features to recommend it to exhibitors.”

[The Bioscope, 16 December 1909]

The film restoration:

The preservation of Il piccolo garibaldino was carried out by the Museo Nazionale del Cinema di Torino, from a fragment of a tinted nitrate print. A dupe negative and a positive print colored with the Desmet method were printed on safety film from the nitrate print.

The process was conducted in 1998 at the Haghefilm laboratory in Amsterdam.
