Da Sorrento ad Amalfi

Director: Piero Marelli – Production: Tiziano Film, Torino – Lenght: 90m – Intertitles: Italian –

The film:

The film opens with a cableway trip; we can watch the sunny view behind the shoulder of the driver and peek at the elegant travellers on the half light of the cabin. We travel along the Sorrentine Peninsula. The images of some panoramic views of the coast follow the daily images of the tourists walking on the streets or women working on the beach. The dominant color of the film is a delicate green toning, often combined to a shiny yellow toning employed for the sunny exteriors, thereby making the contrast between exterior and interior sharper.

Also in this film Piero Marelli focuses on the possibility given by the trick of the light. An emblematic example of this is the final frame showing a sky full of clouds through which the rays of sunshine filter. An almost metaphysic end.

The film restoration:

The preservation of Da Sorrento ad Amalfi was carried out by the Museo Nazionale del Cinema di Torino, from a tinted and toned nitrate print acquired by the Museum in 1994 with a small collection of landscape documentaries. From the nitrate print, a dupe negative and a positive color print - using the Desmet method - were printed on safety film.

The process was carried out in 1997 at the Haghefilm laboratory in Amsterdam.
