The film:

The film Amor sacro e amor profano tells a romantic story. Alberto, a young bohemian painter, is looking for inspiration when suddenly a beautiful girl appears and he quickly falls in love. The girl is a countess who likes painting. Their ideas about art look perfectly shared and the conversation becomes more and more personal. But when she shows him one of her piece, Alberto can’t lie: he criticizes the painting and he  makes her angry. The girl, in order to provoke him, is going along with her cousin Mario, who arrived on purpose, while Alberto is doing the same with a new girl friend. At the end though, back to the first meeting place, they clarify and make it up. In the meantime, the other couple formed by Mario and Alberto’s girlfriend fall in love in turn.

The film restoration:

The preservation of Amor sacro e amor profano is part of a project to valorize the collection of Italian silent films that are conserved at the Filmoteca de Catalunya in Barcelona; the project is promoted by the Fondazione Cineteca di Bologna, by the Museo Nazionale del Cinema di Torino and by the Cineteca del Friuli of Gemona. A dupe negative was printed - using the wetgate option - from a nitrate print (223 m) with Italian intertitles from Pere Tresserra’s collection. Positive prints were made from the dupe negative. The colors were reproduced using the Desmet method.

The restoration was carried out at the L’Immagine Ritrovata laboratory in Bologna in September 2007.
