Tra i ghiacci e le nevi del Tonale
Among the Glaciers and Snow at the Tonale Pass(1918)
Production: Sezione Cinematografica del Regio Esercito Italiano – Lenght: 665m – Intertitles: Italian –

The film:

With the soldiers in the territories of the terrible “White War”: war documentary filmed in Val Camonica. The film begins with images of supplies being downloaded from a train at the station of Edolo. Bread, tins of beef and cheeses were destined for the survival of soldiers along the border line in the area of the Adamello glacier, which straddled the Tonale pass and continued towards the Stelvio pass. In "white war" zones, that is where snow and ice were always present, soldiers had to live for months at 3000/3500 metres of altitude, often remaining for days without contacts with the Valley.

The digital process:

The digitalization of Tra i ghiacci e le nevi del Tonale was carried out by Museo Nazionale del Cinema di Torino from a 2K scan of a 665 meter-long duplicate negative. Colors were reproduced from a nitrate print belonging to the Museo’s collection, wich was badly decaying. Special acknowledgments to the Museo della Guerra Bianca in Adamello.

All works were carried out in 2015 at the L’Immagine Ritrovata laboratory in Bologna.

This digital process was part of a project to safeguard and valorize the World War I films conserved by the Film Archive of the Museo Nazionale del Cinema di Torino and promoted on the occasion of the exhibition, at the Mole Antonelliana, AL FRONTE. Cineoperatori e fotografi raccontano la Grande Guerra [ON THE FRONT. Cameramen and photographers recount the Great War] (curated by Roberta Basano and Sarah Pesenti Campagnoni - Mole Antonelliana, January 29 – May 17 - 2015).
