Nostra marina da guerra, La
(1912)
Director: Luca Comerio – Production: Comerio Films, Milano – Original lenght: 234m – Lenght: 218m – Intertitles: Italian –

The film:

Luca Comerio is maybe one of the greatest documentary filmmaker of the Italian silent cinema. In his endless production, war films have an important place, especially the ones dedicated to the Italo-Turkish War in 1912.

In 2012 the Museum preserved in color its collection of Comerio’s films, previously preserved only in black and white. The overview of the small corpus of these films in their color version adds a further puzzle piece to the knowledge of his production and allows us to understand the fascination that these testimonies played on the big public better. These films lead us to think about how the use of the tinting and toning was very common also in the production of documentary war films. “La nostra marina da Guerra” focuses on the everyday life of the sailors: their work, exercises, free time and battle simulations.

The film restoration:

The preservation was carried out by the Museo Nazionale del Cinema di Torino, from a tinted and toned nitrate print with Italian intertitles, wich was donated to the Museum in 1968.

The process was carried out in 2012 at the L’Immagine Ritrovata laboratory in Bologna.
