Spectre rouge, Le
(1907)
Director: Segundo de Chomón – Director of photography: Segundo de Chomón – Production: Pathé Frères, Paris –

The film:

In an enchanted cave a red spectre enjoys himself with diabolic amusements, thanks to a bewitched vase that gives him special powers. Graceful girls turn themselves into flying flames, disappear when flying, appear in magic mirrors and even in milk bottles. Until a girl, similar to an elf, steals the vase and the powers to the spectre.

The frenetic rhythm of the special effects, the elegant colorations, and the subtle sense of humor allows this film to be numbered among the first masterpieces of Segundo de Chomòn, wizard of the special effects.

The film restoration:

In 2011, the Museo Nazionale del Cinema di Torino and the Fondazione Cineteca di Bologna conducted digital restoration of this film, from a coloured nitrate copy conserved at the Museum.

The restoration was carried out at the laboratory L’Immagine Ritrovata in Bologna.

The film had already undergone photochemical preservation in 2007.

The Museo Nazionale del Cinema di Torino and the Associazione Culturale Strade del Cinema di Aosta published a DVD of the restored film, part of the book Omaggio in musica a Segundo De Chomón (curated by Claudia Gianetto and Enrico Montrosset, 2012).
