The film:

Gli spazzacamini della Val d’Aosta is an example of how motion pictures can depict not only a dream world, but also the social problems, becoming, a precious witness of the reality. While the narrative structure is simple and tested (the romance between a noble and a plebeian girl, the impossibility of the wedding, the “son of the pain” who reconstructs the family unit), what is mainly moving in the film is the ability of render, through the lens of the folk novel, a social dimension made of need and misery.

As in Per il babbo [http://www2.museocinema.it/restauri/muti_restaurati.php?id=65&l=en], the protagonist of the film is the child actor Tonino Giolino. His acting career in the Pasquali & C. film studio finds its position on the new cinematographic star system. The care in the photography in the organization of the space and in the direction of the actors are the distinctive features of this film, almost unknown until now and considered lost for a long time.

The film restoration:

The restoration of Gli spazzacamini della Val d’Aosta was conducted by the Museo Nazionale del Cinema di Torino and the Fondazione Cineteca Italiana of Milano, from a tinted and toned nitrate copy 1,105 meters long, conserved at the Cineteca Italiana.

The restoration was carried out at the laboratory L’Immagine Ritrovata in Bologna in 2010.
