Cascate del Reno, Le
(1910)
Director: R. Moreau – Production: Éclair – Lenght: 110m – Intertitles: Italian –

The film:

Le cascate del Reno (The Rhine waterfall ) is a landscape documentary film that shows, from different perspectives, the largest waterfall in Europe, placed on the Switzerland- Germany border. We can see the stone arch bridge that crosses the waterfall filmed from different angles, the vortexes and the eddies, the view from the panoramic platforms and the paths near  the shore. The point of view is designed to return at its best the majesty of the waterfall, fact, in some frames, the volume of the water fills almost the entirety of the screen. Some rowboats sail across the river. The film ends with a panning shot on the waterfall at dusk represented  with a composition of an orange imbibition and a blue toning.

The film restoration:

The Museo Nazionale del Cinema di Torino and Laboratoires Éclair of Paris collaborated on the restoration of Le cascate del Reno, starting from a nitrate copy conserved at the Museo Nazionale del Cinema di Torino that had been colored using combined processes of tinting and toning. The two institutions chose to conduct a photochemical procedure (dupe negative and 35mm Desmetcolor polyester color copy) and to experiment with digital restoration.

The restoration was carried out at Laboratoires Éclair in Paris in 2010.
