The film:
The text of the film reproduces exactly the records of the trial that took place in Poschiavo-Brusio (Swiss Confederation) in 1697 against Caterina Ross, a 32-years-old farmer, of reformed religion, daughter and niece of the "strie" and accused of witchcraft herself.
The trial was shot in an abandoned industrial shed close to a railway station. The part of the prosecution's witnesses was shot on the outside, in the mountains.
Processo a Caterina Ross, Gabriella Rosaleva’s first feature film, was premiered in 1982 during the 1th Festival Internazionale Cinema Giovani (Opere Prime section).
The film restoration:
The digital restoration has been carried out by Archivio Nazionale Cinema d’Impresa from the original 16 mm negative sound and scene conserved at CSC-Cineteca Nazionale and made available by Emanuela Piovano from the Kitchen Film. After the 2k scan, the original photografic color has been recovered with the color correction and the signs of the time as scratches and snow, has been eliminated with the digital film cleaning. The sound has been digitally restored removing the acoustic flaws and optimizing the timbre quality in order to preserve the contents and to improve the characteristics without changing its auditory identity. The sound intervention has been carried out by Punto RecStudios.
The restoration ha been carried out in 2018 by Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia (Cineteca Nazionale/Archivio Nazionale Cinema d'Impresa) and Museo Nazionale del Cinema, in collaboration with Kitchen Films and supported by Equilibra.
