The film:
"Puce Women was my love affair with Hollywood… with all the great goddesses of the silent screen. They were to be filmed in their homes; I was, in effect, filming ghosts." Kenneth Anger
The short film Puce Moment is a part of Puce Women, an unfinished project intended to celebrate the actresses of the Hollywood Silent Era. Kenneth Anger directed it in 1949, and he released a second version in 1970, replacing the previous accompaniment based on an opera by Giuseppe Verdi with a new folk-rock psychedelic soundtrack composed by the singer-songwriter Jonathan Halper.
The Museo Nazionale del Cinema preserves the second edition of the film.
The film restoration:
The preservation of Puce Moment was realized by the Museo Nazionale del Cinema di Torino starting from a 16mm positive copy held by the Museum, part of Kenneth Anger’s Magick Lantern Cycle and acquired in 1992 by the director Kenneth Anger.
The preservation, aimed to print an internegative scene and sound with the successive synchronization of the image and sound, made possible the correction of the most evident signs of use of the original elements, the density of the image and, when necessary, of the color.
The work was conducted in 2010 by the laboratory Haghefilm Conservation B.V. Cineco in Amsterdam.
