The film:

"We immediately thought of a great parabola of the Church using Kafka’s writings, but managing that his abstractions would have been substituted by real persons, Pope Giovanni, or Paolo, etc. Kafka transforms his clear and precise geography in a metaphysic one. Here, on the contrary, starting from the narrative scheme of a Kafka’s structure, the path is backwards, towards the reality and the concreteness."

[Marco Ferreri, 1972, quoted in Alberto Scandola, Marco Ferreri, Editrice Il Castoro, Milano 2004]

The film restoration:

Marco Ferreri’s L’Udienza was restored by Fondazione Cineteca di Bologna and Museo Nazionale del Cinema di Torino in collaboration with Cristaldi Film. The film was restored from the original camera and sound negative and the 35mm preservation elements deposited by Cristaldi Film at Cineteca di Bologna’s archive.

Ennio Guarnieri, director of photography, has supervised the color correction process.

The restoration was carried out in 2014 at the laboratory L’Immagine Ritrovata in Bologna.

The preservation of the film is part of a project to valorize Marco Ferreri fund, which was donated to Museo Nazionale del Cinema by Jacqueline Ferreri in 2007.

The restoration was made possible also by the first Museo’s crowdfunding campaing on MakingOf.it.
