The film:

Clara, the daughter of the Marquis of Beaulieu, who lost all his fortune, is forced to renounce to marry the Duke of Bligny. In order to come out of misery, she agrees to marry Filippo Derblay, a young of humblebirth who became, thanks to his job, the owner of the ironworks.

Clara considers Filippo an upstart and she despises him. But Filippo, who loves her deeply, can’t tolerate to be humiliated, will prove how much her prejudice was wrong and, at the end, he will win her love.

Among the most captivating aspects of the film, the intense performance of the great diva Pina Menichelli and the high level of the photography, that captures spaces from life as the remarkable images of the factory and the workers at the machinery.

The film restoration:

The restoration was carried out by the Fondazione Cineteca di Bologna and the Museo Nazionale del Cinema di Torino, from two prints and a fragment with Italian, French and Dutch intertitles conserved at the Cineteca of Bologna, Lobster Films in Paris and the Nederlands Filmmuseum di Amsterdam [EYE Film Institute Netherlands]. The intertitles were reconstructed thanks to a list of Italian intertitles, the censorship certificate and title registers which are conserved at the National Museo Nazionale del Cinema di Torino.

The restoration was carried out in 2005 at the L’Immagine Ritrovata laboratory in Bologna.
