The film:

A documentary film dedicated to the submarines provided to the Italian Navy, directed by Luca Comerio in 1912, during the Libyan war showing the military trainings in the Taranto harbor. In 2012 the Museo Nazionale del Cinema preserved a small unit of documentary war films directed by Comerio restoring the original colors on the nitrate copies.

“Sommergibili nel Mediterraneo” is the film in which  the color preservation mainly highlights the great photographic talent of the documentary maker: Comerio alternates a delicate blue toning with an evocative combination of tinting and toning in order to suggest the tricks of light of a sunset on the sea.

The film restoration:

The preservation was carried out by the Museo Nazionale del Cinema di Torino, from a tinted and toned nitrate print with English intertitles, wich was donated to the Museum in 1968.

The process was carried out in 2012 at the L’Immagine Ritrovata laboratory in Bologna.
