Buon anno!
(1909)
Production: Società Anonima Ambrosio, Torino – Original lenght: 125 m – Lenght: 104 m – Availability date: 12/1909

Cast: Ernesto Vaser

The film:

A race against time, literally. Here obsession lurks in the symbolic places of the bourgeois social ritual: the living room, the cafe and the barber. It is New Year’s Eve 1910. The repetition of holiday wishes and calendar offers exasperates Ernesto Vaser to madness. He hits who-ever is in range, runs away and fidgets about. He ends up in jail. But time does not stop and chases us everywhere. Evenin a spartan cell, in a pre-ending with a surrealist feel. Almanacs multiply in a frenetic dance. The moon winks.

The film restoration:

The restored print of Buon anno! was bought by the Museo Nazionale del Cinema di Torino in 1994. The restoration was carried out by the Nederlands Filmmuseum of Amsterdam [EYE Film Institute Netherlands], from a black and white nitrate print belonging to the Jean Desmet collection.
