The film:

A patriotic drama played by one of the most beloved actresses of early Italian cinema: Mary Cléo Tarlarini is Mary, a high society lady who devotes all her dedication to the Italian patriotic cause, overseeing a war hospital and supporting the refugees.

The film was finished after the end of the war and it circulated very little, probably because its patriotic theme was stale by then.

The digital process:

The digitalization of Il canto della fede was carried out by Museo Nazionale del Cinema di Torino from a 2K scan of a 558 meter-long duplicate negative held by the Museo. Colors were reproduced by a nitrate print belonging to the Museo’s collection, wich was badly decaying. An evident editing mistake was fixed and the digitized images were processed with digital restoration tools to stabilize images and reduce major flaws.

All works were carried out at in 2015 at L’Immagine Ritrovata laboratory in Bologna.

This digital process was part of a project to safeguard and valorize the World War I films conserved by the Film Archive of the Museo Nazionale del Cinema di Torino and promoted on the occasion of the exhibition, at the Mole Antonelliana, AL FRONTE. Cineoperatori e fotografi raccontano la Grande Guerra [ON THE FRONT. Cameramen and photographers recount the Great War] (curated by Roberta Basano and Sarah Pesenti Campagnoni - Mole Antonelliana, January 29 – May 17 - 2015).
