The film:
The misadventures of the honest David Copperfield, narrated in three episodes which accompany him from the youth to the maturity. The mise-en-scene of the American production company Thanauser focuses on the simplicity and finds its most meaningful expression on the scenes set on the windy beach.
The picture is the first film adaptation of the Dickens novel, wich was well-loved and known at the time. George O. Nichols chooses to divide the story into three chapters which, as was the practice back then, the movie theater owners could choose to show either togheter or singly. Each episode is therefore created as a movie in itself, with its own climate, atmosphere, environment and references of a different type.
The film restoration:
The new preservation of David Copperfield was based on a 817 meters long black and white nitrate print, with Italian intertitles bought by Museo Nazionale del Cinema di Torino in 1955.
The preservation work was carried out in 2011 at L’Immagine Ritrovata Laboratory in Bologna.
In 2012 the Thanhouser Company Film Preservation, Inc. and the Museo Nazionale del Cinema di Torino published a DVD of the preserved film, with new and original music composed and performed by Philip Carli.
