The film:

The musicians of a magic orchestra, conducted by a young and beautiful orchestra conductor, give their best in order to juice up this scène à trucs, directed by Segundo de Chomón, the wizard of the special effects. They dance, they become tiny and walk on the conductor’s baton, they create the notes of a pentagram with their heads, they appear and disappear inside a giant music paper. The rhythm is guaranteed, as well as, by the tricks realized with great ability, also by the liveliness of the protagonist, smart and mischievous at the same time. The reference to the films with the same topic by Georges Méliès is evident. 

The film restoration:

The digital restoration of En avant la musique was conducted by the Museo Nazionale del Cinema di Torino, from a colored nitrate copy belonging to the Museum’s collections. 

The restoration was carried out at the laboratory L’Immagine Ritrovata in Bologna in 2011.
