The film:

A circus melodrama that exploits the glamour of Baroque sets and the harmony between the actors, novice and esteemed character actors alike. A competition between two opposing models of feminine charm: which is better, the somewhat infantile determination of young Mimì Dovia or the cold elegance of Elena Sangro, to whom D’Annunzio dedicated the poem Alla piacente?

The film restoration:

Maciste nella gabbia dei leoni is the result of a joint restoration by the Fondazione Cineteca di Bologna and the Museo Nazionale del Cinema di Torino based on the two tinted nitrate copies with portuguese intertitles. The restoration work was based on the copies found at Fundação Cinemateca Brasileira of San Paulo and now preserved in Bologna.

The reconstruction of both the film and the Italian intertitles was pobbible thanks to the storyline and to intertitle list preserved by Museo Nazionale del Cinema di Torino.

10 black frames have been inserted in the place of missing parts.

The restoration was carried out in 2007 at L’Immagine Ritrovata laboratory in Bologna.
